Awkward Church Song

A few weeks back, the choir from the Church of Mary Immaculate took a hint from Hollywood and sang the song “I will follow him” as the concluding song. You know the song right? The one with Whoopi Goldberg? Righhhttt that’s the one. When they announced the name of the song, I was like “Oh my, don’t tell me its that song”. I was hoping it was a different song with the same title. Well I was wrong. It was that song.
I don’t know - it just didn’t feel right about singing that song and trying to change the “him” to “Him”. You know what was even more awkward - a few of the congregation started clapping hands.
And *I* feel embarassed - I’m not sure about God, I hope He’s fine with it. I could see most of the clapping-ones were the older generation - you know - those who sang the song to their boyfriends/girlfriends when it was on the airwaves back then.
More horrifyingly - my mom was enjoying the song too! Yikes. My wife and me were just exchanging strange stares at each other. Luckily nobody demanded encore when they finished singing.
I mean, it worked in the movie but not in the church. Well not for me anyway hehe.
It could work if it was a wedding maybe, heck, when I got married, we used Boyzone’s Everyday I Love You as our entrance hymn. At least, the song is reflecting our thoughts for each other.
It’s different when you are re-directing the song meaning to a higher being that is GOD himself.
Can you imagine singing All-4-One’s “I Swear” or Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” and then refer it to God? It’s kinda hard right?
I think if you start to sing the theme from Bodyguard, either you will see Whitney in your head or worse, Kevin Costner.

As for my choir, we had to make sure it gets approval from the parish priest first. (Don’t want to get too overboard at times)

Actually…banyak tu badak…ada satu lagu..they modified the lyrics of Lambanda song…The song is often use in praise and worship like Prayer Meeting…The Lu La Lu song lagi…Banyak la…i think it’s depends on the way we deliver the song bah kan..And how our hearts feel it…that’s what i think…
