Birthday Surprise at Fish & Co

Last Tuesday 18th Dec was my 32nd birthday - yes I am 2 years already into my 30s. Some notable names also on this day include my twin Brad Pitt, Keith Richards (certainly not my twin), Christina Aguilera, DMX, Ray Liotta and Stone Cold Steve Austin. (Check out for more names here).

Anyhow, it was my 2nd last day in the office and my colleagues threw a surprise birthday cum farewell party for me in the afternoon at my favourite fishy eatery, Fish & Co, at Warisan Square.

Actually, I got the hint of the surprise in the morning when my wife “suggested” that we have our lunch there. When I told her that it’s better to go at night so we can avoid the traffic jam, she came up with the excuse that she yearns for the food there, which is definitely strange since we just ate there last week.

But the confirmation came just before afternoon when one of my colleagues who was on leave, skyped me to apologize for not able to attend the party later haha. Thanks Al!

So when my wife and I arrived at the place, there were already 8 of them there, seated at the arranged table. Sindut, the co-organiser, still thinking that I didn’t know about the surprise got into her act.

Her line was “Eh? you guys also makan sini? Come come sit with us lah.”

Nice one - tapi sayang I knew about it already.

Anyway, all of us got into talking and eating, with emphasize on eating and talking about food.

However, there was still a surprise in store and fortunately, the surprise was not only on me.

After finishing our food, my colleagues asked for the cake to be brought out. Little do they know the proper birthday “drill” practised by the staff of Fish & Co.

It started with one of the staff, announcing to everyone present about “someone’s” birthday, and when I say announcing to everyone present, I mean she really announced! She stood in the middle of the place, facing to the tables OUTSIDE the restaurant and started to say out loud.

At first, I thought she was announcing to all that they were closing early or there was a fire in the kitchen and asked everyone to move out. But then I heard she mentioned my name.

Next thing I know, all of the waiters/waitresses surrounded our tables and started to chant their birthday emmm chant? Followed by the birthday song. Watch the short video below - I missed the opening part since it was, afterall a surprise.

The reason we were all laughing in the video was because the guys who were seated at the other end of the table, carried their table away just to dis-associate themselves from the spotlight haha. My wife said my face were blushing - well I agree with that but everyone on the table were blushing as well haha - not only me.

Anyway, it was a fun, though short get-together. Many more wished me later that day and said sorry for not attending the gathering. If everyone who wanted to come did come however, I think I will be even more embarrassed hehe.

So to acknowledge my friends who sacrificed their lunchtime to battle through the traffic jams and pay so much for the food, I would like to acknowledge them here.
