Primary schoolboy - so far so good

Date Posted by Jeffrey on January 14, 2010

A big change happened in the family this year, most notably in the mornings - we are out of the house by 6.15am! Yes Jordan is in Primary 1 and class starts at 7am.

To make time for him to get his breakfast at the canteen and escape the traffic jam, that means by 5am the day’s activity has begun, started first by my wife, followed by me, Jordan and Jewel.

Weekdays morning of showering & dressing up all in an hour - phew. The weird thing is, it feels like you are the only ones who are awake that early but then when you reach school, there are people already had their breakfast and school kids are passing the entrance in numbers.

At least for Jordan, he’s not that cranky in the morning. Now his bedtime is at 9pm and it seems he can handle it. Even Jewel is okay waking up at 5.45am, but at least she can sleep at the nursery.

Jordan in his class.

So far, primary school experience for Jordan has been a little mixed up. By the second week, he has already experienced caning (lightly he says, for being too slow in taking out his book from his bag), forgot to complete his homework which saw him frantically finishing it in the class before the teacher came and lost 2 books (both found later, 1 mistakenly took by his classmate and the other one left at the care-taker’s house).

His “light” enthusiasm for school is still there, no complaint yet of why he has to go to school everyday (which he did asked a few times during his kindy days) and I hope it will maintain.

We hope and pray that he can cope with the Chinese language - if he can’t, then maybe we will place him in a non-chinese school next year or the year after. We’ll have to hear what the teachers has to say first regarding his progress in class.

For me, it’s bye-bye to midweek football. No more early morning rise to catch United’s game. I will have to get by bed best at 9pm too but sometimes I push it to 10.30pm at most.

Man, I didn’t know having a kid in primary school would be so taxing.

Sooner or later you will master the following:

    - still go to bed very late, yet can still wake up early. In other words, 4 hours also can. And can still function normally, and can still go sport later in the afternoon; although a nap during lunchtime is recommended. I tried to bring it down to 3 hrs, but found it impossible; but I’ve heard of at least one person who can manage with ONE hour sleep every night.

    - I’ve found that most non-Chinese speakers cannot write/read Chinese anyway after years in Chinese schools, so personally I think it’s better to just go for Chinese tuition to enable the kids to talk in Mandarin. Plus, I don’t really fancy the (I personally feel) extreme emphasis on academics at Chinese schools at such a young age.

wah ya kah.. the last 2 days I was pushing my bed time to 11pm, so far so good as long as I don’t have a heavy lunch, or I will be really, really sleepy in the afternoon. I would be happy to get at least 3 hours of my own time to do personal stuff.

Jordan was really interested in learning chinese when he was in kindergaten, now he doesn’t show it but he’s not complaining either. I was schooled in Shan Tao up til primary 3 when my dad finally realised I can’t cope but I think that was because I wasn’t enrolled in the chinese kindy.

My son has a better start than me cuz he was in the kindy Mandarin class. We are keeping an open mind and would not hesitate to change his school if he is not progressing well - but at least he’s not in the “tough” school like Chung Hwa/Shan Tao.. I heard those schools are strict and taxing to the kids.

    Jeff. Amen to Ben’s comment!
